4 Good Reasons Not to Gain Weight Over the Holidays

  1. Most people do not lose all the extra weight gained over the holidays. The added pounds accumulate and can lead to substantial overall weight gain.
  2. Bad habits picked up over the holidays can upset healthy eating regimens and teach you that it is OK to binge throughout the year.
  3. Gaining weight, and then working it off, is not healthy. Studies have shown that women who are lean and idle have a lower risk of heart disease than overweight women who suddenly hit the gym.
  4. Binge eating can lead to belly fat as opposed to “love handles.” Belly fat is thought to be a risk factor for both heart attack and stroke.

4 WAYS TO MAKE SURE YOU DON’T!

  1. Be mentally prepared for the fact that the holidays offer lots of opportunities for you to get away from healthy eating habits. If you go into the season knowing there will be temptations, you’ll be better able to avoid them.
  2. Don’t go to family or office gatherings hungry. A healthy snack ahead of time, plus a large glass of water just before mealtime, will curb your appetite while still leaving room for a few favourites from the buffet table.
  3. The stress of holiday shopping and changes to your daily routine can lead to overeating. Take time every day for some kind of physical activity, like a brisk walk.
  4. Don’t overstock the house with food, and try to cook only as much as will be eaten to avoid a lot of high-calorie leftovers.
