Healthier Holiday Entertaining
The holiday season is typically a time of plenty – plenty of appetizers, festive beverages, rich foods and tempting sweets – all of which can lead us to consume several days’ worth of calories, fat and sodium in a single sitting. There’s much you can do to lighten holiday foods without compromising taste. Here are five simple substitutions that can dramatically cut calorie, fat and sodium content:
1. Use low-fat sour cream and other low-fat cheeses
in recipes.
2. Serve cut-up vegetables with low-fat dip instead of
chips and dip.
3. Include several vegetable dishes in your dinner
menu, all served without sauce or butter.
4. Mash potatoes using low-fat, low-sodium chicken
broth or low-fat buttermilk instead of cream and
butter.
5. Serve a fresh fruit salad or angel food cake with
fruit for dessert.
